Holiday Weight Gain!

by Steve Auxier on 11/23/2009

Every year the statistics show the average weight gain of Americans during the holidays.  A recent study showed that 85% of people that gain weight during the holidays are still holding on to it 1 year later!!  The average weight gain from October 1st -January 31 is 5#-21#.  Imagine if you only gained 5# during the holidays every year for 5 years this would be a combined total of 25#!!  Here are 5 tips to help you fight off this creeping statistic!

Here are 5 tips to help you “Battle The Bulge”.

1.  Switch your dinner plates!-    If we switch our dinner plate to the salad plate you feel like you are eating more!  The eyes can trick your mind!  Divide your plate into 3 sections.  1.  Lean protein, 2. Vegetables, and 3. carbohydrates.  Try choosing a whole wheat dinner roll, good fiber will help you feel full!

2.  Do not skip meals-  Many people skips meals or snacks to load up on the big holiday dinner!  This is a bad idea as you will totally over indulge at the BIG meal.

3. Avoid alcohol-  Alcohol is extra calories and can open you up to making bad decisions.  Your will power will be tested!  Drink plenty of water to offset the high carbohydrate intake and all of the excess salt!

4.  Choose lean protein-  Really take advantage of the lean protein!  Turkey breast is a great source of protein packed with essential amino acids to build lean muscle.  Be careful of the ham and other waterfowl (duck, goose).  These types of protein are higher in fat and salt!

5.  Do not deprive yourself-   Treat your holiday dinner as a reward for all of your hard work throughout the year!  Choose your portions wisely and have a taste of your favorite dishes!  When you have the mindset that you can’t have something you will feel deprived and left out.

Now I am human…but after my big meal I do go for a walk, workout at the gym, drink plenty of water and get right back on track! I do not lay on the couch and take the bloated nap!  Get moving!!  Leave the leftovers at the  relatives or give them away.  Leftovers will call your name!!!!
