Hill Training

Hill training is a wonderful addition for all athletes to incorporate into their training programs.  The key to success is be balanced in all aspects of fitness.  If you are a distance runner..hill training will enhance your performance.    Here are 5 reasons why you should add 1-2 days of hill training into your program.

  1. Great alternative to running stairs:  Stairs are definately beneficial but I like hills for the range of motion (ROM).  Running stairs shortens your strides unlike hills that will allow you to really stride out and promote healthy hips.
  2. Metabolic Effect:  Hills produce a large amount of lactic acid production in the large muscle groups.  If your nutrition is on track this will provide a big metabolic effect
  3. Hamstring developement:  Hill running places a great stimulus to the hamstrings which will help improve your running performance and keep you injury free.  Your goal as an athlete is to have a great balance of quadricep to hamstring ratio.
  4. Anaerobic endurance:  Hill training provides anaerobic endurance to help you have that kick at the end of the race.  It is important to be well rounded in your fitness program and have the benefits of both worlds.
  5. Hiit Training:  High intensity interval training is the #1 method of burning fat.  Hill training is a great 20 minute alternative to the 30+ duration run.
